Mohammad Aquil (He/Him)

Aquil is a historian by training. He has secured his B.A. (Hons.), M.A. and M.Phil. from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and is currently pursuing his PhD in the Centre for Historical Studies (CHS), JNU. He has previously taught at the Jindal School of Art and Architecture before moving to JGLS.
At CJLS, he is working on a project related to anti-caste jurisprudence and documenting the atrocities committed on the Dalits since the 1990s. The project explores the effectiveness of legal mechanisms in addressing caste atrocities. Additionally, he has worked for Indian Institute for Dalit Studies and has experience in policy advocacy. He focuses on urban history, modernity, the history of gender, art and architecture, caste, public culture and citizenship. He is currently working on tracing the urban history of Allahabad by using both historical and interdisciplinary approaches and tools. Previously, he has worked and published on the history of women’s writings and urban civic consciousness in colonial north India.
