Monmita Chakrabarti assisted with research and copyediting at the Centre on a variety of projects. She worked closely with the Founder on academic articles about gender in a legal context, feminism, public health, and more. They also mentored Interns and Research Assistants, and led a faculty reading group. She learned a lot about how to be a good advocate for marginalized communities from her colleagues.

Before working at CJLS, they were a student at Kenyon College, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in English and Women’s and Gender Studies. As a student, they held various relevant jobs and internships where they were familiarized with legal language.

Her biggest project as a Research Associate was a survey on abortion rights across South and South East Asia, titled “The Impact of Criminalisation of Abortion and the Need for Legal Reforms in Ten Countries in Asia.” For this paper, they assisted with researching the abortion landscape in the countries covered, interviewing experts, communicating with outside organizations, completing administrative tasks, and copyediting versions of the draft.

Monmita is pursuing her MFA in Nonfiction Writing at Washington University in St Louis. Her published work can be found in The Audacity, Joyland Magazine, and Bending Genres.
